My thoughts, prayers and deep sympathies are with Margaret and all Derek's family at this sad time.
Derek was a rare breed of being an officer and true gentleman who was universally respected and renowned for his professionalism, dedication to duty and concern for others.
He successfully and stoically addressed an exceedingly tough remit during his high appointment as Provost Marshal (Navy) and in my view, he secured the future of the Regulating Branch at a time of deep defence cuts - even more savage than at present - and political pressure.
Against all odds, he played a major role in securing the future of the Regulating Branch, as was, and also, I suspect played no small part in formulating the idea of an embryo Royal Navy Police Branch which exists today.
Past members of the Regulating Branch and present members of the Royal Navy Police have so much for which to thank Derek. His major contribution to his Branch in particular and the Royal Navy in general during an illustrious career cannot be overstated - we owe his a great debt of gratitude and so very much more.
Derek was character, charisma and commitment and example to us all - I will miss him.
God Bless your Sir - your duty done - Rest in Peace.

When I must leave you for a while
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you through the years
But start out bravely with a gallant smile
And for my sake and in my name
Live on and do all the things the same
Feed not your loneliness on empty days
But fill each working hour in useful ways
Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near
And never, never be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky.
